Second College Grant – Great North Woods

A number of these nature images come from copious amounts of time spent up exploring one of New Hampshire’s great wildernesses known as the Second College Grant. I’ve been fortunate enough to vacation up there for a number of years with my family, and its always been a peaceful and beautiful way to recharge the batteries.

The grant is part of Dartmouth College and is a 27,000 acre piece of land which is gated and has about 10 cabins on it. You can rent those cabins through Dartmouth’s Outdoor Program Office. To find out more about the grant take a look at this link here. Visual design is often the polar opposite of engineering: trading hard edges for subjective decisions based on gut feelings and personal experiences. It's messy, unpredictable, and notoriously hard to measure. The apparently erratic behavior of artists drives engineers bananas. Their decisions seem arbitrary and risk everything with no guaranteed benefit. Scott Stevens

Design is the search for a magical balance between business and art; art and craft; intuition and reason; concept and detail; playfulness and formality; client and designer; designer and printer; and printer and public. Valerie Pettis
